Characteristics of the Advanced Agricultural Technology and Sciences Program

Agriculture in Japan is required to achieve a stable food supply, food safety and fewer environmental impacts while strengthening its constitution and increasing productivity.

Agricultural research and education are expected to provide solutions for these targets, by developing integrated and efficient agricultural production technologies and cultivating human resources who can conduct research that gives adequate consideration to the application of these technologies to practical agriculture.

Against this background, the doctoral program in Advanced Agricultural Technology and Sciences aims to supervise students who intend to advance their studies in master's programs and provide such human resources as mentioned above to meet these requirement, covering such areas as field informatics, crop production management systems, the functions and regulation of animal production, crop genomic breeding, fruit tree physiology and genomics, and the development and utilization of ornamental plants.

This three year independent doctoral program is operated in collaboration with the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization located in Tsukuba Science City, with scientists from this organization serving as visiting professors.

What is the Cooperative Graduate School System?

Currently, agricultural production in Japan is far lower than production in other advanced nations, both on a calorie basis and a production basis, so the improvement of agricultural productivity and the strengthening of the constitution of agriculture are desired. With the aim of developing agricultural production technology within Japan and overseas, and enhancing effective agricultural technology used in the field of agricultural production, as well as cultivating the human resources necessary in order to achieve this, we have built an integrated linkage system that utilizes the research environment concentrated in Tsukuba Science City, which has a record of developing multifaceted agricultural production technology focused on such aspects as crops, gardening, stockbreeding, soil, machinery and information. In other words, we have developed linkages with the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization and utilize its abundant resources in order to provide education and research guidance that emphasizes results and focuses on practical solutions tailored to the needs of agriculture and related industries. In the cooperative graduate school system, the focus is on project research within specific timeframe, focused on themes with regard to which there is a great social need. In order to conduct this project research students are required of research techniques and groundwork, as well as expertise; for students who wish to engage in such research, an advisory committee is established to provide group guidance and assist them in their learning in related areas and fields during their master's program, while also including lecturers (assistant guidance counselors) from other related programs in the Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences. This enables us to nurture abundant expertise and creativity. The acquisition of such resolution skills and the cultivation of highly educated, expert professionals with research skills are features of the cooperative graduate school system.
