Characteristics of the Biological Sciences Program

The Master's Program in Biological Sciences aims to cultivate researchers and highly trained professionals with the research ability and abundant knowledge fundamental to this that is required to conduct original research in the field of biological sciences. It focuses mainly on research in the field of basic science, but we also conduct biological science education and research from the perspective of research into applied bioscience. This program consists of three domains that are complementary to, rather than independent of, each other: 1) the diversity bioscience domain, consisting of the fields of phylogenetic systematics, which aims to clarify the paths of biological evolution, and ecological science, which aims to achieve an understanding of phenomena seen at the level of individual organisms, populations and communities; 2) the cell bioscience domain, consisting of such fields as cytology, embryology, physiology and genetics, which aim to clarify life phenomena at the level of the individual organism based on cellular interaction, by means of the analysis of intracellular signaling networks; and 3) the molecular bioscience domain, consisting of such fields as molecular biology, genetic informatics and metabolic physiology, which focus on research into universal life phenomena at the molecular level, based on genetic information and molecular interaction. Furthermore, under the cooperative graduate school system, we have established cooperative relationships with top-class research institutes located in Tsukuba Science City (such as the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research) and are conducting more advanced, wide-ranging research and educational activities.
